A while ago I went over my monthly bandwidth limit due to spambots and people leeching images from my site. I made it harder for spambots and removed the popular images from Google images, which made me drop well below the bandwidth limit again. The account page says:
Quote:
If you exceed your limit, your excess will be carried over to the next month. If this ever reaches 1000MB at the end of a calendar month you will be charged 1.50 per complete GB."

This formulation makes me think that the excess bandwidth will just be used as initial bandwidth count for the next month, so if I have 100MB excess and I use less than 900MB during the following months, the excess will vanish. But apparently it's different: the excess counter only increases. A search in the forums confirms my suspicions.

I'm not asking to change the excess bandwitdh system (although it would of course be nice if it worked the way I thought initially ), but as there seem to be more customers who have the wrong idea about how it works, I would suggest changing the formulation in the account section.

I had a similar problem, especially from sites like MySpace. I managed to significantly reduce bandwidth by using the following in my .htaccess file:

Code:
# Prevent Remote Hotlinking
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?mywebsite\.org.uk [NC]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !stolen.jpg [NC]
RewriteRule \.(jpe?g|gif|bmp|png)$ /stolen.jpg [L]

Instead of the image being linked a small jpg is returned with text saying:
'Sorry, remote image linking is not allowed.
It uses up my bandwidth which I have to pay for.
If you want to use the image drop me an email'

That was polite wasn't it? Others use other pictures
