A friend has a business website that he pays someone to administer and knows very little about the mechanics of its hosting and (.co.uk) domain registration.

He's recently discovered that the site's been down for some time and the 'webmaster' is not answering his communications. I suspect that it's a simple static site; he doesn't seem to get much business from it.

He's asked me for help.

I don't know the full details yet but can someone tell me if 34sp are able to take over the domain registration without the authorisation of the existing registrant (I assume it's the 'webmaster')?

If so then I will suggest that my friend moves everything here and will probably install a CMS for him.

Many thanks.

Your only hope is if it was registered as a company. If so then you may be able to get Nominet to release it to us. Otherwise, it belongs to the registrant and they are the only ones that can change anything on it.

OK - thanks for that Daniel. It might be easier to persuade him to register a new domain.

OK, he's decided to register a new domain and take out a hosting package.

We will do this together but I can't remember if I need to leave some time between the two processes or if I can set up the hosting (and attach the new domain) as soon as I complete the domain registration.

Anyone?

It's actually easiest to do them together - just sign up for your hosting package and the domain will automatically be included.
