As I understand it our sites are on a FreeBSD operating system, not Unix or Linux.

We run an Actinic E-commerce solution on our site at www.motormedia.co.uk

There is an add-on to actinic to add 'Also bought' and reviews functionality, but it is only available for Linux hosts.

http://www.ecommerce.uk.com/actinic_plugins_cross-sell.html

Does anyone know if this will install and run correctly? Any advice appreciated.

In reply to my own post!

I believe 34sp host on FreeBSD systems. The smartdecisions people who make this product are just finishing the FreeBSD version of the product, so if the Linux version fails, I'll be trying that.

Just to clarify for anyone who might come across this post.

Yes 34SP do use FreeBSD, and not unix (but then does anyone except maybe `Sun' customers?) or GNU/Linux.

As for GNU/Linux applications running on FreeBSD, I would expect most apps to run ok provided they are compiled on FreeBSD. But I'm no expert. Not sure about binaries, I seem to remember it being possible but perhaps that was just support for ELF and not GNU/Linux specifically. If anyone does know please correct or support me.

FreeBSD has "Linux Compat" support. This is more than just emulation of Linux, it has been known to actually run Linux applications better than Linux itself. However, this of course is probably not installed on the servers and only 34SP staff could truly answer that question.
