I'm a relative new commer to Linux, but have been running a debian box with apache/mysql/samba/shorewall for a small LAN with direct broadband connection for about a year.

What I want to do is monitor the usage of the broadband connection. How much its currently been used? How much has been downloaded during the day? Statistics per local ip basically.

Can anyone recommend any software to do this kind of thing?

(just to be clear: debian box has two nics, one for the BB and one with a local ip to act as gateway for the local LAN)

Sanners./

MRTG will do the trick for you, or it's more modern replacement rrdtool.
