Opera is now free There is still the odd site it can't handle properly but it's a lot slicker than Firefox, IMHO, and it certainly renders faster.

Download from here.

No. AFAIK it was written from the ground up, in Norway. Try it, you'll like it.

I disagree, Opera is much slower & Firefox would be far slicker.

Opera is only free cos people decided why pay for it when Firefox is just as good (Read better) and it's free.

Not here. I must admit I might have exaggerated a bit on the rendering - I've looked at a few sites side-by-side and there's not much in it.

I'll still argue about 'usability' of Opera in preference to Firefox though
It's more 'mature' (but YMMV of course) - I like the rewind/fast forward, tiling, the way it presents security information, not forgetting 'paste and go'. Maybe there are extensions in Firefox for these but I've not found them.

On the other hand I can't get Moontaxi working yet in Opera, can't double-click to close a tab, or watch the flashing lights on my router when FF downloads (another) security patch

I'm sure we'll all agree, though, that they're both a hundred times better than the other browser whose name escapes me.

Have you tried K-meleon recently?

Added 20.20

I've just found an open source FF extension that pre-loads some files at windows start-up (which is why IE loads so fast).

you can find it here.

Haven't tried it yet - still playing with Opera.
