Post subject: Ruby support? Posted: Thu Oct 13, 2005 9:45 am;
Are there any plans for Ruby support in the near or distant future? I'm just learning the language and it would be really handy to have support for this technology.

Froots - was this looking to running ruby scripts via cgi?
If you can drop us an email with information of what you are trying to do we maybe able to implement something to do this.

Post subject: Ruby on Rails (with FASTCGI) Posted: Fri Oct 14, 2005 11:50 am;
Hi,
I too am currently learning the Ruby on rails scripting language - and would like to host with 34sp. Having read the information from the developers it should work fine on Apache and MySql - as far as I can tell it implements via a cgi. The only thing I have read is that for production systems they recommend using a cgi addon called fastcgi - can this be installed on the web servers? Bascially I guess my question is whether or not 34sp are considering supporting ruby on rails?

HI.
We are currently working with a user to look into offering ruby with rails support.
There is no guarantee this will go ahead but we do have running properly(i think!) on a test server which a user has been given access too to see if any issues occur.
If all goes well we may look into rolling this out across the servers (although it may wait until the servers have gone through their next plesk upgrade to avoid having to do it twice - the upgrades have a habit of wiping out any custom changes we make)

Can I add a vote for ruby on rails support too. I'm looking to do some work with it pretty soon.

Its in testing on one server at this time, only been on oneday so too early to say if there are any real issues that would stop us implementing it on other servers.
Will keep this thread updated of how things go and if any issues are encountered (when i get feedback from the person who is testing it)

Can i ask what servers people are on that want access to rails, at present we have only a couple of individuals testing it (on non personal hosting servers) , now that ruby on rails went to 1.0 may add it to a couple of the main shared hosting servers for trialing purposes to see if any affects are seen.
It will be run under mod_fastcgi and i can supply the necessary dispatch.fcgi and public/.htaccess files when its ready.
This will be a pure production enviroment, any real development should be done locally and then just the relevant files uploaded.

I've just got my first Rails app up and running on my 34sp.com server. By default, you end up with "/public/" in your URLs, which I didn't want. Following some playing around, I've worked out how to get rid of that, and have written up some instructions at http://www.mcqn.net/mcfilter/archives/computers/removing_public_from_the_url_of_rails_apps.html in case it's useful for anyone else.
Cheers,
Adrian.
