I'm on a Mac so I'm not really in the know here but a friend of mines XP laptop has practically slowed to a crawl - even opening IE takes over a minute to process. I suggested running some free virus/adware etc. programs, or even backing up and doing a clean install, then installing these programs first to try and circumvent it happening in the future (if it is indeed to do with some malicious things on the system). I was round yesterday and found a free thing that scanned the hard drive and reported 21 eroneous things on there but required a fee to actually remove them, we are poor underpaided types and I'm pretty sure you can get these sorts of things free right?

So I was wondering if there were a standard batch of free apps that is reccomended for XP users to install or some such?

Failing that, is there any other reason the machine would be acting so slugish? The harddrives far from full, and it used to blaze through things less than a year ago.

Have you tried defragmenting the hard drive?

Right-click My Computer, then click 'Manage', 'Disk Defragmenter'.

for freebies i can recommend this to clean, then this to adware, and this to get those viruses. goto add / remove programs and uninstall any adware looking types b4 u run any adware programs first though, this will avoid any start up errors appearing. in command prompt you can also see whats running at start up by typing 'msconfig', and clicking on the startup tab. if you know what ur doing it's safe to deselect any badies here.
