Hi,

I am having a problem with setting my Home Page in IE6. If I set it and click OK, it doesn't set it. No error, but if I go back to settings of Internet Explorer the home page is back to its original (immediately).

I have also tried setting it via the register. If I do that I get the error "Cannot edit Start Page: Error writing the value's new contents".

This only effects this key. All other keys in the same folder can be editited, just not "Start Page". Also I have check that permissions are correct.

I have just reinstalled this computer so haven't had the chance to do much damage to it yet. Also there aren't likely to be viruses on it although I have scanned for common viruses and the like just in case, again no help.

I have created an image of the hard drive so can try random things as I can get it all back again at the press of a button so am open to any suggestions, no matter how unlikely. I am at a loss - haven't (as far as I am aware) had this before.

Yes. Just tried again.

I am currently doing extra Virus scans and also scans specifically for Spyware, etc... I don't think much will be discovered, but I may aswell try.

Uninstalled ZoneAlarm (after several attempts) and fine now. That's the last time ZoneAlarm goes near my computer.

Is there any recommended Firewall software either free (or at least with a free version) so I can see what it is like at a basic level.

Also does anyone recommend any anti-virus software again free (or with a free version) as I currently have no anti-virus protection.

Have got rid of norton after many headaches so am pretty unprotected at the moment.

Thanks.

I am downloading it now. Once complete I shall start reinstalling my system again, and then install it and see what it's like.

I have had at least 1 person tell me they use it and it's good.

By reinstalling, do you mean over-write what's already on your pc ?
If you're starting from scratch, I recommend Format C:
With IE, I assume you're using some version of Windows. Which one ?
The only trouble I had with Zone Alarm was that I couldn't get it to work on a LAN. Other than that I reckon it was alright. Each to their own tho !
For a free antivirus I use AntiVir from http://www.free-av.com/
Other free stuff that may be of use ...

Thanks, I'll look at that.

Yes I reformat and install a fresh copy. The O/S is Windows XP Professional.

Zone Alarm is suppose to be good, but everone probably has their own experiences. I am just trying different things after getting rid of Norton since it has annoyed me once to often. Although I still use Norton Ghost to make backup Images of my system in case of disaster.
